Recent Work
“Watson” Pastel 21” x 14”
My beloved collie is 11 now and my constant companion. I thought it was time for the official portrait. Over the past 40 years, I have had 8 rescue collies, most of them tri-color and usually two at a time. But Watson, has become so attached, I knew he wouldn’t be happy sharing. So, my muse sits inches from my easel, keeping me company. This upright pose is command performance for popcorn!
“Celine’s Morning” Oil on Canvas 10.5” x 14.5”
With a little encouragement, it took a 4:30AM visit to Drew Harbor on Quadra to capture this gorgeous sunrise. Celine, visiting from France, was intrigued with the idea of a dawn plein-air paint-out. So I now have a record to cherish our morning spent together.
“Dougie and Noelle” Pastel 18” x 23”
I painted Noelle the day she confirmed her pregnancy! I waited years for the inspiration of a background that would echo her coloration and her sense of anticipation. Each time I paint Mt. Dougie Dowler, from Drew Harbor, I thrill to the challenge it presents. This time, at sunrise, the colors just fit the bill. My island has been a bedrock of source material I never tire of painting.
“Portia” & “Indy”
Two preparatory pastel studies for a larger oil painting combining both grandchildren. They came to my studio and posed for sketches and photographs. It gave me an opportunity to get to know them both and observe their interactions which will be an important component of the larger painting.
Chemainus Theatre Gallery Show
Originally planned for April 9-May 8, this show with over 40 oil paintings, pastels, and etchings will be rescheduled. Landscapes, figurative pieces, birds, and animals are all captured from local subject matter. A number of plein-air sketches (painting from life), images captured on site, representing about 2 hours spent chasing the sun and shadows across the canvas, will also be featured.
