This June, I was introduced to a new process: engraving my acrylic plate using a commercial laser engraver (like etching on glass). This print was based on a commissioned illustration I did for the book, “Mrs. Johnson’s Rabbit,” by Jim Creighton, a local author. I liked my hare sketch best, so decided to go with that one. I inked the plate with brown, wiped off the excess, and applied a roll-up for the yellow moon, and a 'rainbow roll' for the bluish to pinkish background. Damp paper was placed on top of the plate, and run thru the press. As the first print I’ve done since 2020, it’s nice to be back in the ink!
Cloud Series
During the lock-down, I indulged in an on-line cloud painting course. Resulting in 15 pieces that were quite manageable with my limited energy levels. The average size was 4” x 6”. To my surprise, local gift shops have sold quite a few of them. These days, I think folks are reluctant to make big purchases, so these, priced under $200, fit the bill.
Quadra Island Compilation CD Cover
Covid provided an opportunity to find 20 of Quadra's musical artists here during lockdown. The CD offers one original song each, written and recorded here on the island. I was asked to submit several images to use on the covers and for the inside insert. I was thrilled!
“Laura” Pastel 18” x 2”
Laura was a Help'xer with us for several weeks, and I couldn't resist trying to paint all that red hair! She was always game to take on projects that challenged her physically. Her goal was to produce "intimidating" muscles, so I simply had to include that aspect of her persona.
Recent Plein-air Paintings
The past two summers found me outside, 'far from the madding crowd'. Quadra's landscapes never cease to provide an endless source of inspiration. All of these are framed, oil on canvas. The central image has sold, but the others are available.
Self Portrait, April 2022
In conclusion, I wrap this up with a recently completed colored pencil and pastel drawing. For a portrait artist, this is an obligatory process every few years. The hat is my ‘go-to’ wardrobe accessory. I'm almost incognito on Quadra without it!
